BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer is reportedly not exactly a fan of the Z2, but the Munich grapevine suggests the board now understands that the brand must not surrender this segment to the competition such as the Mazda MX-5.

The Z2 will definitely be a soft-top roadster. Better still, it will almost certainly not be front-wheel drive. But now Munich R&D types are working out whether a classic RWD matrix would work best, or whether to gamble a new 4wd platform.

Not only does the one-off prototype offer an expected zero tailpipe emissions range of up to 200km, a 0-100km/h time of under eight seconds and a governed top speed of 160km/h, it also debuts a new take on eco-friendly interior materials.

The BMW-owned, British luxury brand’s EV follows a similar front battery, rear motor layout as adopted by the Tesla Model S and Australian EV Engineering’s proposed electric Commodore.

Under the long bonnet of the 102EX lives a huge 71kWh lithium-ion battery pack, made up of 96 cells packed into five modules and laid out in a similar shape to that of the original engine and gearbox.

Attached to the rear subframe are twin 145kW electric motors driving the rear wheels through a single-speed transmission. The combined output of 290kW falls short of the petrol V12’s 338kW but the torque output of 800Nm is 80Nm up on the combustion engine - sufficient to cope with the extra 235kg it has to haul over the original’s already hefty 2485kg.

The battery pack, thought to be the world’s largest passenger car battery, has four charging units, enabling three-phase fast charging in eight hours, single-phase charging from a standard household socket in 20 hours and even wireless charging using inductive technology. Wireless charging requires the 102EX to be parked over a floor-mounted transfer pad, which uses electromagnetic energy to ‘send’ power to a corresponding induction pad on the underside of the car.

We've reported recently that Mercedes-AMG was working on a smaller, cheaper SLS spin-off called the SLV, which would share the Gullwing's front-engine layout. That plan is now on the back burner. Mercedes is still interested in a derivative of its new halo model, but that prospect is currently being referred to internally as SLM. The M stands for mid-engine, as captured in the proportions of our spy illustration.
The change in course is primarily due to concerns about overlap within the Mercedes lineup. "Our friends in corporate rightly pointed out that a front-engine sports car would have been too close to the SL, which is an important cash cow for the brand," explains our source at AMG. The performance division considered going in the opposite direction and building a "super SLS"-something wilder than the defunct SLR McLaren-but soon realized that such a concept wouldn't fit the times. AMG has found that even its elite customer base expects more environmental and social responsibility going forward, so the SLM will emphasize lightness and efficiency. But why go with a mid-engine configuration, which will basically require AMG to start from scratch rather than adapting Gullwing components?

In the early stages of the SLM's gestation-kicked off under the leadership of Volker Mornhinweg before he left AMG to run the Mercedes van division-engineers experimented with a twin-turbo four-cylinder, but that option was dropped because it would have been hard to find a profitable price point. Another alternative was simply to replace the SLS with a mid-engine coupe powered by the latest small-displacement V-8. Again, the idea was nixed because it didn't provide enough incremental business. The most likely scenario now is a 350-hp, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 paired with two electric motors positioned in front of the driver. To maximize synergies, the front axle, elements of the battery pack, and the electronics platform will be adopted from the electric-drive SLS, which is due in 2012. The rear suspension, complete with the seven-speed transaxle, is another significant carryover item. Expect AMG to adapt the aluminum spaceframe it developed for the SLS, although the firewall will obviously move rearward.

BMW X6s and Infiniti FXes of the present, AMC Eagles of the past--the coupe-like crossover vehicle is a trend that's been in gestation a long, long time. And man, has it produced some ugly offspring.

Now it's spawned the 2012 Range Rover Evoque, and finally, at long last, it makes hot sexy sense.

The Evoque may be the first truly sensuous SUV in history. It's a captivating stiletto heel in a closet full of Land Rover earth shoes. Some loose family features are appliqued on its taut, angular body--one that, you won't be surprised to hear, has a fan in the form of taut, angular hominid Victoria Beckham. But those are mostly for show, little geocaching leftovers of Range Rover's past. This soft-roader is all about tomorrow, and it lives to be seen with every hair in place, not covered in muck.

Erase some of the Rover-bred notions you've applied to the Evoque's performance, the ones that imply trucky handling and rustic V-8 torque. There's even less Landie here. Derived from the LR2, the Evoque throws down an entirely fascinating new gauntlet with its 240-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder. It's coarse on the go, with plenty of drivetrain noise and noticeable turbo lag, but the smallville drivetrain gives up nothing to the heavier, less strong LR2 and it sets the Evoque apart from the bigger Rovers that luxuriate in eight-cylinder streams of torque. It's an urgent, attention-craving piece, as whizzy as an Acura RDX, with similar fuel economy of 19/28 mpg.

All-weather traction is a forte, given its Terrain Response dial-a-mode all-wheel-drive system, and the Evoque's steering does a great imitation of the units in compact Volvos and Fords. The light touch follows through to the most dynamic model, with its magnetically-controlled suspension and muted, supple ride. And it still has more than eight inches of ground clearance, should you get high-centered on some of the last-season stuff stacked on the curb at Saks.

If you expect to give up a lot, other than extra cash, to fit into the Evoque lifestyle, you may want to try one on for size first. There's less room than the LR2, but the Evoque is wider, so overall interior volume isn't intolerable. Up front it's quite comfortable for adults, a little less so in the back seat but not objectionably so, so long as you've bought into the coupe-like premise. What's not easy to swallow is a big adult gut, if you have to clamber into the back seat of three-door Evoques. Meanwhile, the car itself can tote almost a couple dozen cubic feet of luggage, no matter which body you choose.

Subaru plans to launch four new models over the next five years, including the Toyobaru sport coupe next spring, followed by a hybrid in 2013 that could be based on the 2009 Hybrid Tourer concept.

The new models are a key element of a new five-year business plan, called Motion-V, announced Wednesday by Subaru's corporate parent, Fuji Heavy Industries.

The Motion-V plan also calls for Subaru to boost global sales from a projected 633,000 cars during the current fiscal year to 900,000 by 2016. Much of that growth will come from the U.S. and China, where Subaru will begin local production shortly, possibly in a joint venture with Chinese automaker Chery.

Subaru also said it plans to boost fuel economy across the board by an average 30 percent. In addition, it wants to "become the world's leading brand in safety performance by providing all-around safety that comprises risk-avoidance technologies (active safety), systems in collision safety (passive safety), and pre-crash safety features."

Among those features is the company's EyeSight active driving assist system that uses stereo camera technology.

While things have been fairly quiet lately regarding Mazda’s rotary-powered sports car, the RX-8, we have confirmation from various sources in Japan that Mazda is indeed working on the next-generation rotary engine dubbed the 16X. There are reports that Mazda’s rotary engine development team has grown from 30 members to 60 in the last year, meaning that the Hiroshima-based company is quite serious about a new Wankel. The 16X will be much more fuel-efficient than the current Renesis rotary engine, and will probably be named the SKY-R, part of the company’s new generation of lean-burning engines called the SKY Series.
The SKY-R will most likely have displacement increased by about 300 cc from the current 1.3-liter 2-rotor Wankel. In past generations, she was often labeled planet Earth's favorite taxi. (Or have you always preferred the Ford Crown Victoria with the shiny black leatherette?) The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, however, has long since graduated to become a premium middle-management darling in all corners of the globe.

Still, even Mercedes-Benz North America would have to admit that a mid-life and/or new model year E-Class is not generally a traffic-stopping event. This time around, however, there's more going on with Mercedes' ninth-generation contender than, say, adding a new Pipe Smoker's Package or overhead cold beverage storage-TRONIC. And while it may still not cause a road block, this mid-shelf-life version of the W212 E-Class should, at least, make everyone slow down to rubberneck a bit, because the new V6 and V8 E-Class wants to take you farther on a full tank while making more power and torque to exercise your executive privileges.

After teasing us for quite a while now, Ferrari has finally revealed the official details on their new successor for the 612 Scaglietti. Called the FF - an acronym for Ferrari Four (four seats and four-wheel drive), the new model is the company’s most powerful, versatile four-seater ever, as well as its first ever four-wheel drive car.

The concept car was designed by Pininfarina, and according to Ferrari "the new car represents not so much an evolution as a true revolution." The new model will deliver "unprecedented level an extremely sporty, high-performance character with incredible versatility, superb comfort and sophisticated elegance, guaranteeing both driver and passengers an absolutely unique driving experience."

The new Ferrari FF GT sports car concept made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and a production version will follow by 2012.

Further details of the 2012 Bentley Continental GT have surfaced that reveal that the new 4.0-litre direct-injection V8 engine that will power the vehicle will be available in two versions. In fact, the V8 unit of the new Bentley Continental GT will be offered as a single turbocharged variant or a twin-turbocharged one.
At present, the Continental GT is powered by a 6.0 liter W-12 engine that is capable of producing 575 hp. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds with top speed of 198 mph.
Bentley’s decision to equip the 2012 Continental GT with a V8 instead of a W-12 unit is goaded by practical reasons.

When Ferrari launches a new generation sports car on the market, everyone is well aware that they should expect at least three versions: a coupe, a spyder, and a Scuderia. We’ve already had our fill of the Ferrari 458 Italia Coupe and have some idea as to the Spyder version, but this new rendering of a Scuderia model got us thinking. What should we expect from Ferrari’s most fiery version of their newest sports car?

If this rendering from Milanno ArtWorks is any indication as to the design of the Scuderia, then we can expect a much more aggressive design illustrated by the sharp edges of the bumper followed by the sharp edge design of the front lights. Since the Scuderia name is synonymous with weight reduction, expect a weight loss similar to that of the 430 Scuderia, which lost about 220 lbs compared to the standard model. This will be done with a mostly aluminum body, since Ferrari has already made it clear that the would stick to this material other than using carbon fiber like the competition.
